Sydnei “Gabby” Diggs

Ketchikan, Alaska

Gabby Diggs is described by her mother, Kathleen, as a typical teenager. She loves to socialize with her friends and talk on the phone. She does well in school and is captain of the volleyball team. As she grew up, Gabby was never hurt badly enough to require a trip to the emergency room. That changed very suddenly on a February day in 2007. Gabby was riding her ATV when a squirrel darted into her path. She swerved to avoid hitting the animal and fell. At first, it appeared that she had only sprained her ankle. As doctors examined her, though, they discovered her ankle was broken, so was her leg, and she had fractured her skull. Gabby was transported to Seattle because of her head injury. She spent eight days in the hospital and has fully recovered. Several months after the accident, Gabby saw one of her Airlift Northwest flight nurses in the parking lot of a local store. She jumped from her Mom’s car, ran to the nurse and gave her a big hug. Gabby will always remember that nurse, Kathleen says, and really appreciates the excellent care she received.
