Petersburg, Alaska
Petersburg, nestled on Mitkof Island along
the Inside Passage of Alaska, is known around the country for
its scenic beauty.
With just over 3,000 residents year-round, the town can swell
to many thousands more when the tourists arrive. They come
to see wildlife—from humpback whales to bear to more than
200 species of birds—along with majestic mountains and
forests. Once there, they learn about a community that takes
pride in its self-sufficiency. People point to their medical
services as an example. Petersburg residents are fortunate to
have a hospital, clinic and long-term care facility, staffed
with excellent doctors and nurses, and a first-class EMS team,
well trained and committed to helping their neighbors. “We
can always count on the Petersburg team to be prepared when we
arrive,” says Shelly Deering, director of clinical operations
for Airlift Northwest in Alaska. “They practice outstanding
patient care and are eager to learn as much as they can to enhance
their skills. We appreciate what they do to make our jobs easier.
In the end, it’s the patient that benefits.”
