Jennifer
Turner, RN
Ketchikan, Alaska
Jennifer Turner knows what it takes to deliver
effective patient care—compassion, excellent training
and a cool head. She demonstrated all three when she visited
her fiancé last spring aboard the Alaska State Ferry,
the M/V Kennicott. While observing operations on the vessel
bridge, she heard that a man had collapsed on deck. Jennifer
quickly responded, rallying help and directing the emergency
response by the crew. “I’m usually the one receiving
the orders,” Jennifer told an Alaska reporter after
the incident. “But in this situation, I was the one
barking the orders.” Coincidentally, Jennifer had just
completed an advanced cardiovascular life support course provided
by Ketchikan General Hospital and Airlift Northwest. As a
nurse, she knows that the first few minutes of care are critical
for a patient suffering from a heart attack. When he nominated
Jennifer for an award for her action, Ketchikan physician
Dr. William Anthes said: “It is because of her clear
thinking and guidance of the resuscitation that this person
was successfully resuscitated and is alive.” Jennifer
divides her professional time between Dr. Anthes’ office
and Ketchikan General Hospital.
