Lloyd
Schneider
Olympia, Washington
Early Christmas morning 2007, Lloyd Schneider
complained that his chest hurt. By the time his wife Barbara
got 911 on the phone, he was unresponsive. Coached over the
phone by the Thurston County CapCom dispatcher Joe Spickelmire,
Barbara performed CPR compressions on Lloyd’s chest
for 10 minutes until medics arrived at their rural home. They
took Lloyd to St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia, and Airlift
Northwest was called to provide air medical transport to the
University of Washington Medical Center. Lloyd had an aortic
aneurysm and needed surgery right away. He doesn’t recall
much about the experience. “I remember the communication
among the nurses and pilot,” he says. “I remember
the engines starting up and finding the sound comforting.”
Some might find engine sounds alarming, but Lloyd is a retired
Air Force pilot and flew for American Airlines until five
years ago. Today, Lloyd has made a full recovery with no long-term
physical or mental limitations from the experience.
