Wrangell
Fire Department
Wrangell, Alaska
Wrangell, Alaska is one of the most scenic
areas in the state. Located on an island south of Juneau,
commercial fishing
provides the livelihood for the 2,000 people who live there.
But even as a small community, Wrangell rightly boasts about
the quality of services available to its residents, including
its excellent fire department. Made up almost exclusively
of volunteers, the department fights fires, provides emergency
medical services and conducts search-and-rescue operations.
Everyone works together to provide superior care and service
to their friends, neighbors and the community. Department
members are especially proud of their Junior Firefighter
program, which trains high school students in CPR and helps
them become EMTs. This early experience often leads students
to medical careers—with some coming home to Wrangell
to practice. “We’re pleased to have the Wrangell
Fire Department as our partner,” says Shelly Deering,
Director of Alaska Clinical Operations for Airlift Northwest. “Together,
we are able to provide the emergency transport services their
community deserves.”
